Uncle Rwamiti and the Bicycle of Life
It was a Saturday evening in the village, and Uncle Rwamiti was repairing his old black bicycle under the mango tree. The children gathered, laughing at the rusty chain and wobbly wheels.
“Uncle,” one boy asked, “why do you still ride that bicycle? You should buy a car like others.”
Rwamiti smiled, lifted the bicycle, and said:
“This bicycle is life. If you know how to balance it, you go far. If you ignore it, you fall.”
He began to explain:
- Mobility for Independence 🚶♀️
“The wheels are your legs. Keep them strong with walking, cycling, and movement. If your wheels collapse, your whole life stops.” - Happiness by Ritual 🌸
He rang the old bell. “This sound reminds me: every day, start with silence, end with gratitude. Without rituals, the ride is noisy and directionless.” - Financial & Lifestyle Strategy 💰
He tightened the chain. “If you don’t oil your chain with planning, the bicycle will break when you need it most. Money, too, must be tended.” - Circle of Care 🤝
He pointed to the handlebars. “Can you ride without holding these? No. Your friends, neighbors, chosen family — they are the handles that steer you straight.” - Cultural & Spiritual Anchors 📜
He tapped the bicycle frame. “This is the backbone. Without culture and wisdom, you have no identity, no strength. The bicycle collapses.” - Legacy & Storytelling ✍️
He showed the dents and scratches. “Each mark tells a story. I will not live forever, but my stories, my wisdom, will ride on in others.” - Nature as Therapist 🌳
Finally, he leaned the bicycle against the mango tree. “Even a bicycle must rest against nature. Soil, trees, rivers — they remind us we belong.”
The children were quiet. Even the adults passing by stopped to listen.
Rwamiti looked at them and said:
“You may live alone, you may parent alone, but if you ride your bicycle with wisdom, you will never be lonely, never lost. Independence, dignity, and joy will always be your companions.”
And as the sun set, he rode off, wobbly but steady, while the children clapped.
