Most people think batteries die suddenly.
One day the warning light appears.
A mechanic shakes his head.
A quotation is produced.
A replacement is recommended.
The verdict seems final.
The battery is dead.
Or so we are told.
But Uncle Rwamiti never trusted quick funerals.
In his village, he used to say that there were two kinds of deaths.
The first happened in a moment.
The second happened gradually, long before anyone noticed.
A battery, he would insist, belongs to the second category.
And so do many other things.
Marriages.
Businesses.
Friendships.
Nations.
Even human health.
The warning signs often appear long before the collapse.
The problem is that most people only notice the obituary.
The Cow That Everyone Wanted to Sell
Many years ago, two farmers in the village each received a healthy cow from the same breeding programme.
The animals were nearly identical.
Same breed.
Same age.
Same starting condition.
Five years later, one cow was producing more milk than ever.
The other looked exhausted.

Its owner was preparing to sell it.
The villagers argued endlessly.
Some blamed bad luck.
Others blamed poor breeding.
A few claimed the cow had simply reached the end of its life.

One farmer maintained grazing schedules.
Protected the animal from extreme heat.
Ensured clean water.
Treated minor illnesses early.
The other paid attention only when a crisis appeared.
One managed a living asset.

Today, the same lesson is unfolding inside batteries across Africa.
The Great Battery Funeral Industry
A curious thing happens whenever a hybrid vehicle develops symptoms.
The battery becomes the prime suspect.
Warning light?
Battery.
Reduced fuel economy?
Battery.
Performance issue?
Battery.
Unusual behaviour?
Battery.
Sometimes the diagnosis is correct.
Sometimes it is not.
Yet replacement is often discussed before stewardship.
Imagine if doctors behaved the same way.
A patient develops fatigue.
The doctor immediately recommends organ replacement.
No investigation.
No lifestyle review.
No monitoring.
No second opinion.
We would call that absurd.
Yet this is remarkably close to how many battery decisions are made.
The result is predictable.
Perfectly recoverable batteries are retired.
Healthy batteries are misunderstood.
Owners spend millions unnecessarily.
And valuable battery life is discarded.
Batteries Do Not Die. They Are Managed.
This may be controversial.
But it is worth saying.
Many batteries do not fail because they are old.
They fail because they are poorly stewarded.
Heat.
Neglect.
Improper charging.
Poor operating habits.
Delayed maintenance.
Misdiagnosis.
These silent factors often shorten battery life long before age becomes the primary issue.
The same principle applies whether the battery sits inside:
- A Toyota Prius.
- A Toyota Aqua.
- A Honda Hybrid.
- A home solar installation.
- A future electric vehicle.
Different applications.
Same stewardship challenge.
The Hidden Cost Nobody Talks About
When people discuss batteries, they usually discuss replacement cost.
UGX 5 million.
UGX 8 million.
UGX 12 million.
Sometimes more.
But the true cost is not the replacement itself.
The true cost is premature replacement.
Replacing an asset before it has delivered its full value.
That is an economic problem.
Not merely a technical one.
A battery is not simply a component.
It is an investment.
And investments deserve stewardship.
The Coming Age of Battery Stewardship
Across the world, the conversation is changing.
The future is no longer simply about electric vehicles.
It is no longer simply about lithium batteries.
It is no longer simply about renewable energy.
The future is increasingly about stewardship.
How do we:
- Extend battery life?
- Reduce unnecessary replacement?
- Improve battery decisions?
- Manage battery uncertainty?
- Maximise value from expensive energy assets?
These questions matter because batteries are becoming central to modern life.
They power our transport.
They support our homes.
They store our energy.
They increasingly determine the economics of mobility itself.
The societies that learn stewardship early will enjoy a significant advantage.
The societies that rely solely on replacement may find themselves paying an unnecessary price.
Uncle Rwamiti’s Final Reflection
One evening, as the grandchildren gathered around the fire, Uncle Rwamiti pointed toward a large mango tree.
“Do you see that tree?” he asked.
The children nodded.
“It is older than your parents.”
“Why is it still standing?” one child asked.
The old man smiled.
“Because people confuse age with decline.”
“The tree survived because someone cared for it.”
He paused.
“The same is true for batteries.”
“The question is not how old your battery is.”
“The question is how well it has been stewarded.”
Then, as always, he stirred the fire and added one final thought.
“A wise person does not ask only when something must be replaced.”
“A wise person asks how long it can continue to serve.”
Perhaps that is the real battery question.
And perhaps it always has been.
