Kampala city, like many other cities,is a city of vibrancy, resilience and boundless energy. It is also a city grappling with traffic congestion, noise and air pollution, unacceptable road carnage, and car-centric urban design that enchroaches on available land resources.Without doubt, the city like many other cities in the world, prioritizes cars over people! If one is not careful, daily life can feel like an endless cycle of frustration.

Is happiness in such cities still possible?Absolutely! Happiness is not just the absence of stressors, but the ability to cultivatejoy, resilience and meaning even in challenging circumstances.

One of the most powerfull tools for happiness is cognitive reframing-the ability to change the way we look at a situation.Traffic jams, pollution and congestion are realities, but our response to these realities is within our control.Ancient stoic wisdom emphasizes that we should focus on what is within our control.Harvard psychologist Shawn Achor,in his book,’thehappiness advantage’,explains that happiness is ninety percent mindset, and only ten percent external circumstances.By shifting our focus from what is frustrating,to what is within our control,we reclaim emotional wellbeing.

WHAT CAN CITY RESIDENTS DO?

.View traffic jams as a gift of time-use commuting hours for podcasts, audiobooks, mindfullness exercises or even phone calls to loved ones.

.Adopt an explorer.s mindset-discover new walking routes, street food stalls,or hidden gems within the city.

.Find humour in the chaos-traffic jams are a fertile ground for jokes! If you leave home angry, the traffic jam will humble you!

.Seek out green spaces in and around the city,Reconnecting with nature enhances happiness.

.Practice digital detoxing.Choose positive digital content that uplifts: select and choose this consciously.

.Embrace sustainable mobility as and when you can:walk.cycle, use public means like buses or trains. The world,s happiest cities like copenhagen and Amsterdam vigorously promote active mobility:walking and cycling.

.Urban gardening:bringing nature to the city.Plants in apartments, balconies on the eleventh floor, inside offices, everywhere in our cities.Green spaces in the city enhance happiness.

.Practice gratitude, mindfullness and meditation.Worldwide, these practices have been used to enhane personal happiness irrespective of the circumstances.

Urban challenges are many. However as happiness stuies have shown repeatedly, external circumstances do not dictate happiness-mindset.choices and habits do.Choose to be happy amidst the urban chaos today!
