Did you know that diabetes was virtually absent in traditional African societies? Today, urban Africa faces a surge in type 2 diabetes, largely due to sedentary lifestyles and processed diets. But what if the solution lies in our past—specifically, in the way we moved?

As a Doctoral researcher specializing in Urban Mobility and a Cultural Happiness Mentor, I have been researching the intersection of mobility, happiness, and metabolic health. I call this concept Happy Mobility—an approach that integrates movement with cultural identity to promote diabetes prevention and reversal.
Why Was Diabetes Absent in Rural Africa?
Traditional African societies thrived on active daily movement, including:
Walking long distances for water, farming, or trade
Dancing as a form of celebration and exercise
Manual labor in communal farming
Cycling & non-motorized transport as daily mobility options
Modernization has replaced these with cars, office desks, and screens, creating a physical inactivity crisis—one of the key drivers of type 2 diabetes.
Happy Mobility: A Cultural Approach to Diabetes Reversal
Rather than viewing movement as “exercise,” Happy Mobility brings back joyful, culturally integrated physical activity:
Walking as a Healing Practice
Dance-Based Movement to regulate blood sugar
Cycling & Non-Motorized Transport for urban mobility
Community Farming & Nature-Based Activity for active living
Mindful Mobility & Stress Reduction through storytelling and nature walks
This isn’t just about movement—it’s about restoring well-being through cultural reconnection.
The Business Case for Happy Mobility
As part of my Cultural Happiness Reset Program, I am developing corporate wellness training, community-based programs, and wellness retreats that integrate Happy Mobility into diabetes reversal strategies.
Imagine a future where:
Workplaces encourage movement through African-inspired wellness programs
Cities design walkable, bike-friendly spaces for active commuting
People reconnect with culturally rich movement practices that promote both happiness and health
Join the Movement!
How do you incorporate movement into your daily life? Let’s start a conversation in the comments!
