Uncle Rwamiti’s Story: The River That Flowed Around the Rock

“My dear parents,” Uncle Rwamiti began, “I’d like to share a tale about my friend Oryem and his teenage daughter Apio. Apio was struggling in school, and Oryem was worried. He tried everything to help her, but nothing seemed to work. One day, I took him to the river near Lukwago’s village. We watched as the river flowed smoothly around a massive rock in its path.

“‘You see, Oryem,’ I said, ‘the river doesn’t try to force its way through the rock. It flows around it, adapting its course.’ Oryem looked puzzled, so I explained, ‘Sometimes, as parents, we need to be like the river. We need to flow around the obstacles, find creative solutions, and be patient.’

“Oryem took my words to heart and changed his approach with Apio. He stopped pushing her so hard and instead, focused on supporting her. He helped her find a tutor, and they worked together to find ways to make learning more engaging. Apio began to thrive, and their relationship improved.
